On The Run…

It feels like I have been on the run! This year has been incredible. It’s been an absolute blessing. The past three weeks have been an absolute dream. My birthday was July 25th. Happy Birthday To Me! I have been to Philadelphia, then to The Curvy Fashionista‘s TCFStyle Expo in Atlanta, Georgia.  Usually, I plan a party to celebrate my birthday, but this year I decided to do things differently and celebrate on the beautiful island of Jamaica. There were so many opportunities that were presented to me and I am very thankful. Yes,  #menofsize do travel!

Welcome To Yard!!

I booked a flight with United Airlines and I regret taking a seat in the aisle. I got bumped the entire flight. I think some of the passengers and staff thought that I was part of the aisle. But, it didn’t discourage me. After watching two movies we landed safely in Jamaica. Jamaica recently celebrated 55 years of independence, it was a very exciting time in Jamaica. And this man was in the middle of the celebrations. The music is unforgettable, from reggae to the dance hall. Amazing. I danced to Popcaan and Vybz Kartell most of my vacation.

(I even got the chance to squeeze some #brawnfit in!)

Due to the Trans Atlantic Slave trade, families were separated in the most horrific way! When I went to Jamaica there were so many familiar faces! I kept asking myself, I wonder if I am related to anyone of these beautiful people (My mother’s side is from this beautiful island.) It was very interesting to be thousands of miles from home and still feel connected to the people. The escape from reality was so necessary. I thought about the parallels between all Africans in the diaspora. There is so much more, but I will reserve my perspectives for another time.

The weather was amazing! The beaches were absolutely beautiful. I was able to see these size 15 feet in the water! It was absolutely inviting and I didn’t want to leave. At all. I felt at home. I felt at peace. I was able to reflect on this year and prepare to finish up strong. And there was a hammock strong enough to hold all 310 pounds of me. I went to that hammock about a good four times and marveled at how strong the wood is! The food was absolutely amazing! I had plantain almost every day that I was there. The sugar cane wasn’t as sweet as I would have liked, but the mangoes were phenomenal. Regardless of your size, make sure you travel. It’s so necessary and very liberating. I am debating if I will make a birthday trip an annual event. I had an amazing time. This summer is proving to be memorable. I may argue that Summer 17 may be the best summer to date. I had the awesome opportunity to travel to The Curvy Fashionista’s #TCFStyleExpo in Atlanta, Georgia. I booked a flight and a hotel room, then I got ready for the ATL. This year for the first time, men of size were included. Which made me a bit nervous, I felt like the stakes were high. There was only one minor problem, I had no idea what to wear.

After much thought, I decided to head to JCPenney. JCPenney offers a variety of stylish and affordable fashion that help men of size feel fashionable and feel confident. JCPenney has affordable options for men of size and it’s absolutely effortless. The whole shopping experience was easy. I went to the #TCFStyleExpo ready for the world in a way that only men of size can!

I had an amazing time! I think subconsciously I am planning another trip the peach state! The southern hospitality was unparalleled. I am from New York City and in most cases, we only say good morning to those in our neighborhoods. This was not the case in Atlanta. I felt out of place if I didn’t use my manners. This mindset carried over into the #TCFStyleExpo. The energy was absolutely amazing. Men and women uniting with a similar understanding isn’t something that should be taken lightly. The event was amazing and I felt amazing in clothes that look great and that are affordable. It’s a win/win. I had the privilege to meet fellow brawn/plus male/big and tall influencers such as from Chubstr, Rah Mosely from Rah Mosely and celebrity stylist and blogger Marv Neal.

Summer Time In New York City…

I love the summer! There are so many possibilities in the summer! The ice cream trucks drive through theneighborhood at least twice a day. The “icee” carts and all through out the local parks. The summer youth basketball tournaments are some of the best basketball games to witness. (I love to watch the youth cultivate their talent.) The food tastes so much better, even the halal carts seem to have some extra spice.  To live in New York City during the summer months you will realize that there is nothing like it on the planet earth! I am willing to debate, I am not being biased because New York City is my place of birth.

What Are “Fatheadz?”

I have worn glasses for most of my life. I take them off for my photos, but as of late I hold the glasses in my hand. It’s my way of staying true to myself. But, too many times I have difficulty finding frames to fit my face. Some frames were too small, the sides of the frames would press against my face. I felt that I looked like a fool. Please believe me, in high school my classmates let me know that I looked like a fool.

We also had the opportunity to speak with Rico Elmore head of Fatheadz.

 

What prompted the CEO to make sunglasses for people of size? 

After forgetting to pack his sunglasses on his honeymoon to Las Vegas, Fatheadz CEO Rico Elmore shopped for hours to find a pair that would fit comfortably. Discouraged by the lack of options for the plus-size market, Elmore decided to launch a company that would make oversized eyewear for people with big heads and called it Fatheadz.

Regardless of having limited experience in the eyewear industry, Elmore was extremely eager to disrupt a stagnant industry and steered focus to his newfound dream. Elmore eventually manufactured his first pair of Fatheadz sunglasses in 2006 and hundreds of orders were being processed within weeks. Today, the brand offers more than 100 unique eyewear offerings for men and women of all head sizes.

Did he feel ostracized in the fashion world?

Thousands of consumers today feel ostracized in the fashion world as brands continue to ignore the “big & tall” markets. As the undisputed leader in the XL eyewear, Fatheadz is a motivating force on why we can no longer outcast the full-figure marketplace.  Whether its clothing or accessories like eyewear, no one should have difficulty finding products that are fit accurately and fashionable. Hoodies In The Summer?

As much as I love summer, the one thing that I dislike is that the weather won’t allow me to wear a hoodie. Just like most of men of size, one of my favorite pieces of clothes is a hoodie. Most plus males, big and tall men and brawn men, would definitely agree with me. Hooded sweatshirts are a necessity! If I had my way, I would wear a hoodie all of the time. I would sweat like I played a championship game if I wore a traditional hoodie in the summer. So, when I find a clothing company that can help me wear a hoodie in the summer, I get excited!

How are you #BodyPositive if you take probiotics?

Being body positive isn’t only for women. Even though I am a man, I realize that being body positive isn’t only being happy with your appearance, but being body positive means to take care of your body. I am 6 feet, 305 pounds (yes, I dropped some weight!) and I realize that I am never going to be a skinny man. The truth is I am absolutely fine with that. I don’t want to be slim. Imagine me skinny? My head is huge enough. I refuse to look like a bobble head.

What are probiotics?

I came across probiotics it was the weirdest thing initially. Why would I put bacteria into my body? It sounded nuts. I felt like someone was trying to sell me oceanfront property in Iowa. But after further research, I decided to give the probiotics a try. Hyperbiotics is a company that makes probiotics. I am very cautious as to what I put into my body. I don’t eat fish, seafood or pork. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of beef. It’s just on occasion I partake. So, when I found out the ingredients that probiotics used, I jumped for joy.

Because of my size, I try to drink a gallon of water every day. So, I admit I am regular. I use the bathroom frequently. However, as I am taking the probiotics, I am a lot more regular than usual. I am pleased! Whatever toxins that are in my body definitely need to be removed. The more that I take them, I will definitely keep you guys informed. I am pleased with the results! But, so far I am feeling vibrant and I have energy when I am working out. There are a lot of components within the probiotics to benefit our bodies. Being conscious of what we place in our bodies is being body positive. So, far the PRO-15 and the Better Body are my faves!

Summer Time in New York City!

The weather in New York City has no been the greatest for me. I am a man that loves the heat! I can’t wait until summer hits. But, it’s like summer is taking forever. Body Positivity In The Gym

In a lot of aspects, when body positivity is mentioned the initial concept that is women are the only ones affected. In no way am I negating the struggles that women deal with, but I do recognize that men share similar struggles as women. Not all men have the traditional body type. There are images plastered everywhere with the idea of what is healthy or attractive. We are all born differently, so the idea of a “standard body” is unrealistic. We all have different body types, but it’s our imperfections that make us perfect.

The Gentlemen’s Curb At Blink Fitness?

Many of my readers know that I would prefer to work out in private or in a playground where I wouldn’t be bothered. Blink fitness began an initiative called #ManCrushMay where men of all body types have a platform to work out in a venue with no judgment. Here is some more information on Blink’s initiative:

It’s hard to believe that I am in olive. I thought I would look like a huge ninja turtle. Yes, as of late I am venturing into new colors. I know many other men of size can definitely relate to being restricted when it comes to wearing different colors. The weather is changing and I represent for all men of size that it’s perfectly fine to wear colors that are out of our “norm.” The weather in NYC has been weird. The weather feels like fall still.
