The Pros And Cons Of Owning A Motorcycle

Have you ever dreamed of owning a motorcycle? It’s a pretty popular desire, particularly for men or anyone who’s a bit of speed freak. Adrenaline makes you happy, and there’s nothing like the adrenaline that riding a bike can give you. There are downsides to owning to a motorcycle, though. It’s not all fun and games, and they’re not necessarily suited to a family man. But that doesn’t mean you should write off the idea of having one. If you’re thinking about it, weighing up the pros and cons is essential before you put any money into buying a motorbike.

Pros

There are some great reasons to own a motorcycle, whether you’ve never ridden one before or you’re looking to get back to it after a break.

It’s a Lot of Fun

Let’s face it, the main reason you want to get a motorbike is that it’s cool. It will make you look and feel awesome, and it’s so much fun too. Sure, you still have to stick to the speed limit while you’re on the road (in fact, you need to be extra careful), but there’s nothing like feeling the wind as you ride. Why be trapped inside the metal box of a car when you could be getting in touch with everything around you? If you can’t stand your journey to work every morning, swapping out your car for a bike could be what you need to get a new lease on life.

It Could Be More Affordable Than You Think

You probably look at motorcycles and think they must be expensive, especially when it comes to the big names like Harley Davidson. Just like any vehicle, they can get very expensive. However, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money. You can easily buy a more affordable bike, and you can even go for one of the luxury brands if you’re prepared to buy used. Sites like CleanHarleys.com help you find the perfect used bike in great condition. You’re likely to spend a lot less on a bike than a car. Owning a motorcycle can save you money in other ways too, requiring less fuel and less space to store it.

Decrease Your Carbon Footprint

Bikes are more fuel efficient than cars and trucks. You’ll be saving money and doing your bit for the environment by choosing to ride instead of drive. You’re only using a small vehicle, instead of driving a car with most of the seats empty, so your carbon footprint isn’t any larger than it needs to be. If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient bike, Honda is particularly good at making them. There are also discussions of how hybrid technology could be useful for motorcycles in the future.

Have Advantages on the Road

Riding a motorbike instead of being in a car can give you some advantages over other drivers on the road. Firstly, it’s easier to park your bike. It’s only small, so finding a space for it is much simpler. The slim shape of a motorcycle also means you can weave between traffic, which can help you to get where you’re going faster. Of course, if you want to take advantage of these benefits, you need to be courteous on the roads too. Don’t be that hated rider who annoys all the drivers.

Cons

There are downsides to owning a motorcycle too, which are important to consider before you decide to buy one. They won’t necessarily put you off, but you should acknowledge their existence.

It’s Not Exactly Family Friendly

Riding a bike might be cool, but it’s not ideal if you’ve got kids. Once you start a family, you could still have a motorcycle for your daily commute or just to take out on the weekends. But any time you need to go somewhere with your family, the bike will be staying firmly in the garage. Some people end up selling their bike when they start a family because they no longer have the time to ride it. Having children or being in a long-term relationship can also make you feel more concerned about safety. When it’s just you, you’re willing to take a few more risks, but you don’t want to leave your family on their own.

Safety Concerns

There’s a reason that some people call motorcycles “donorcycles”. Being on a bike leaves you more vulnerable, and if you have an accident, you’re more likely than a car driver or passenger to be injured or killed. In fact, the NHTSA says that a motorcyclist is 27 times more likely to die in an accident than occupants of other vehicles. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to be safe on the road. Wearing the right protective gear and engaging in responsible behavior can reduce your risk of accidents.

Only Really Good in Fair Weather

You ideally need certain weather conditions to enjoy yourself on a motorcycle. On a fine day, you can feel comfortable and arrive at your destination safely. But anything from rain to a really hot day could stop you want to get on your bike. You don’t want to get soaked in the rain or be uncomfortably hot in your protective gear. Staying safe when it’s wet or icy is harder too, which is another reason to leave your bike at home when the weather isn’t so great.

You Need a Motorcycle License

If you’re new to riding a motorcycle, you’re going to need to get your license. You usually need to have a separate endorsement on your driver’s license that shows you know how to ride a bike safely and legally, which requires a test separate to the one for driving a car. It might not take you too long to learn, but you’re going to have to spend the money making sure that you’re legally allowed to ride on the road. Visit dmv.org to find out how to get your license.

Before you get yourself a motorcycle, think about the pros and cons of owning one. It’s important to consider everything before making a decision. It’s The Gentlemen’s Curb a lifestyle blog where fashion meets fitness in a BIG way.

man travels

A few weeks ago, I headed to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic for some rest and relaxation. I live in Brooklyn, New York so I jumped at the chance to breathe some fresh air.

Most of the time, traveling as a person of size is not easy. But… traveling is good for the soul so you should never let your size stop you from exploring what’s out there in the world. Hispaniola has a very rich history and I’m grateful that I was able to experience the island.

Besides the normal hiccups traveling, I realized that Delta Airlines is NOT made for people of size. I felt like I was sitting in a child’s seat the entire flight. I know for sure that the next time I fly with Delta Airlines, that I am upgrading to first class; not for anything more than for comfort.

Despite the flight issue, once there, I had a phenomenal time! I can’t fully describe how calming and freeing it was to do absolutely nothing. I ate when I wanted. I slept when I wanted. I even got comfortable when I wanted.

The menu was amazing! I had pineapples and watermelon during every meal. Since pineapples are my favorite fruit, the fact that there was so much pineapples available to eat, that was a highlight of my vacation.

I ate so much fruit and drank so much water that I felt refreshed and ready to tackle everything. And that I did!

I tried so many things that were on my “must-do” list while there. Most notably, I mustered up the courage to go kayaking.

At 6’1 and 324 pounds, you become hesitant about trying new activities where your feet aren’t on the ground. However, I decided to face my apprehensions and get my “husky” self into the Atlantic Ocean.

**That’s what’s my great grandmother calls me: “Husky”. I can’t even argue with a 94-year-old woman.**

I listened carefully to the directions given and hopped into the kayak. The water can hold up cruise ships that weigh thousands of pounds. So I had nothing to be fearful or apprehensive about, right? Nah.

I ended up overboard. It was one of the funniest things that happened on vacation. I should have placed myself in the center, which would have balanced the boat. In retrospect, I wasn’t as centered in the boat as I thought. I tried again and was successful. I was not about to give up.

I almost kayaked to Spain! <laughs> Not bad for the big guy. Don’t let your size be your crutch. Always keep trying until your goals are reached. Whether you’re trying a new activity or just trying anything in life where you are hesitant because of your size, never give up.

Overall, I had a phenomenal time and suggest all men, especially of size, get out there and travel. The Caribbean sun and blue water is a must for everyone.

In traveling, make sure you can be accommodated. Make sure you aren’t cramped up. Don’t sit near a window seat on a plane unless you have enough leg room. The only thing I wanted to do was stretch my legs on the flight!

I am from Brooklyn, New York. Although I love my city, sometimes city life can be too intense. At that point I realized a vacation was needed. The workload I placed on myself was starting to get to me, I decided that I was going to take some time away to gather my thoughts.

I realized that Delta’s seats are not for men of size! I felt like I was in a box the entire flight. I am going to upgrade to first class the next time that I fly with Delta, for comfort reasons only. But, comfort is definitely needed regardless of size. It’s just that some of us need more “comfort” than others. The flight was only for a few hours, but it felt like a year and a half! After the flight situation, the airplane landed and I was off to my hotel.  The decor of the hotel was amazing! The floors were marble and there were exotic animals on the resort.

I hung out with the locals of the island. They were friendly, I saw the churches and the schools. I was given a taste of daily life on the island. I went to the beaches that were far way from the resorts. Those beaches were the best! The water was so blue that it looked fake! I saw plantain plantations and coca leaf plants, I enjoyed the care free life style the island! The weather was hot and the beaches seemed to call you in! But as usual some activities that I planned didn’t go as well for me because of my size. We made it work, size doesn’t stop the show! I needed some clothing that matched my size and my personality.

Enter: Large Lad clothing company is a company that is made with men of size in mind. The slogans “large and fully in charge” speaks to how I feel about myself. And if you are a man of size reading this post, then the slogan should speak to you as well. Being 6’1 and 324, I am what many would consider to be a large lad. I am sure Stevie Wonder could see that! Check out Large Lad Clothing and see the awesome clothes! Jayme Weir the CEO of LLC, put a royal feeling into many of the designs of the LLC clothing brand. I always wanted to ride an ATV and all other motorized vehicles that would get me a traffic ticket if I drove them in New York City. I fell in love with speeding, I guess the Large Lad clothing got to my head, because I felt that I owned the highways and cause an accident. I am safe. No one was harmed, but the experience was amazing.
