The ‘Curb’s Essential Phone Review- The Gentlemen’s Curb Plus Male Influencer

In Lifestyle On The 'Curb

I have been an Android fanatic since the beginning. I was so excited about Google’s first phone called the G-1!  I loved the open source market and how Amazon shopping was once integrated into the Android Market. (It’s also bizarre that the port for charger and headset were the same. I hated it then. Now, it seems to be the standard for the phones.)

The Essential Phone

In the shortage of stock Android phones, a company rose and debuted the Essential PH-1. The company is a new company made by one of the first developers of the Android operating system. No logo, no bizarre designs, just a high-quality phone. I was excited! I didn’t understand the marketing plan, but I gave it a shot! I am an Android fanatic as stated, so I didn’t have much to lose.

The Essential Phone

What I dislike about the phone is that some of the “essentials” weren’t considered.
The camera is could be so much better. There are dual cameras, but the mark is missed. The camera is also lacking a lot of features in my opinion. (I will be using my iPhone for the camera.)

The screen is impressive, but there is a camera in the middle! It’s an eyesore. It throws off the dynamics of the phone. The phone also boasts the worlds first 360 cameras for a smartphone.

phone, blogger, instagram, tech,

Essential Phone

I have an iPhone 7 and comparing the processing speed in recording the fingerprints. There was a significant difference! I was absolutely impressed. The RAM and memory for the phone are impressive! The phone runs smoothly and I am using 21 gigs already. As of yet, I haven’t received one crash report yet. I purposefully leave as many apps as I can running. And the phone’s hardware is able to run all of the apps with ease.

The phone’s speaker is absolutely impressive. It overpowered the iPhone 7 and the Samsung S8 .
The phone is very sturdy. I dropped the phone three times accidentally and there wasn’t a scratch on the phone. The phone is made with some titanium components. (I am a fairly tall man, so my fear with smartphones is dropping them, but not with the essential phone.) I love the design of the device. I love that the Essential phone charges quickly. It helps especially with blogging and always being on the go.

Team Essential can only go forward from here. A very strong first showing. I am very impressed. The phone reminds me of my Motorola Nexus. Now if I can only find a headset and a phone case because that’s an absolute chore! Great work, I am looking forward to more from the essential team in the future. As Man Of Size, Have You Ever Felt Limited In Fashion?

In too many cases, I have obeyed the rules. I do believe at on point I stuck to safe clothing styles. As a man of size, I would choose to wear a polo shirt, an oxford shirt or a sweatshirt. I felt as if I couldn’t go wrong with these choices. At any time that you saw me, I was safe. As a big and tall/brawn/plus size man, I felt as if those were the only options available for me. I wouldn’t admit it before, but I will admit it know. To be totally honest, those clothing styles made me feel trapped. I felt extremely limited.

New Rules With ASOS

Many brands have ventured into making clothes for men of size. But, ASOS has had a few diverse clothing options for us! We are done with traditional looks for fashion for men of size! New York City has some of the best bottomless brunches on the planet and I made an appearance and represented for all men of size. The drinks were unlimited, but so were the looks. I am not a man who receives compliments often, but I felt like the fat version of Lance Gross!

I also paired this look with some boots from ASOS! I wasn’t aware that they carried large sizes. I wear a size 15, so when I see a brand that carries large size, I get very excited.

Sometimes we have to stop making excuses…

A lot of us make excuses as to why we cant work on the best version of ourselves. From a fitness stand point, we make excuses as to why we cant work out. “The gym is too far.” “The gym is too expensive.” Or the most famous line “I will start on Monday.” I know these lines, because I have said them myself time and time again. And at a point, I actually believed these lines. As a man of size, I definitely need to be more aware of my health. I don’t ever want to be skinny, I love my size and my weight. I just want to be alive for the long haul. So, I am trying to convince myself that these are excuses and will no longer be accepted.

Instead of making reasons as to why we can’t go to the gym, there are many items in our homes and playgrounds that we can use to benefit our bodies. For instance, the couch at home or the chair at the office can be used to our physical benefit. For some illustrated examples click the link here.

ASOS In Brooklyn?

The voices of men of size are finally being heard! There are finally some better clothing options for men of size. ASOS recently made an announcement that they were launching a big and tall line, I was excited. (I get excited when I hear about new designers that cater to men of size. You can read the blog post on the initial launch here. We were also able to sit down with one of the models as well, check out our interview on Scott Bayliss.)

Kavah King for the Gentlemen’s Curb

But, enough of that! The Gentlemen’s Curb had an another opportunity to collaborate with ASOS!  I am a resident of New York City, Brooklyn to be exact. So, I decided to sample the clothing in one of the beloved locations in Brooklyn. There is a lot of history on the bridge and what ASOS did s definitely broke ground and placed the brand on a path to become an iconic and diverse brand. So, the location of the Brooklyn bridge is a no-brainer.

Kavah King for The Gentlemen’s Curb

First, I want to start with the look. ASOS has a motorcycle jacket for big men! I was in shock, usually, the brands that I find don’t fit my arms, but the jacket fails to pass my stomach. I found one that I loved in ASOS’ plus male section.

I matched the jacket with a long sleeve t-shirt:

I hope you enjoyed the pictures of my hometown. I also hope that you check out some of ASOS’ big and tall offerings. But, I would love to know what are your thoughts. What did you think of the scenery? What did you think of the looks? Leave a comment or email us kavah.king@gentlemenscurb.com. Enter: MVP Collections

When I got the news that Mo’ Vaughn started a clothing line catered to plus males/brawn/big and tall men, I was absolutely excited. Mo Vaughn had a standout career in MLB. Here we have a man of size who is an established athlete and a champion. It’s only fitting that men of size are equated with this level of excellence. I felt honored to collaborate, especially because it shatters stereotypes that men of size aren’t gifted athletically.

With MVP To Have To Do It BIG!

The Notorious B.I.G. was one of the best rappers but his career was cut short because he was murdered. The Notorious BIG was a man of size. The rapper embraced his size and help many people appreciate men of size who have ben viewed previously as sloppy, insecure and awkward. (Heavy D was another rapper who was known as the overweight lover. Heavy D was stylish, gifted lyrically and the ladies loved him.) I applaud the efforts that designers make to cater to what men of size. We are a bit tired of the old designs and tired of being limited to “traditional” styles.

At MVP Collections, Mo Vaughn made sure that the designs weren’t old. They weren’t just oxfords or polos shirts that brands that cater to men of size usually carry. Personally, I felt like I needed the heather gray t-shirt with a curved hem. Which is almost impossible to find at sizes 3x and up. Trust me! When I saw the shirt I almost did a backflip. Yes, all 300 pounds of me.  I searched for a while to find a shirt with a curved hem for men of size and MVP Collections answered the call.

If you haven’t gathered as of now, at times I like to throw on a suit. Then at times throw on one of my hoodies. It’s all about diversity. Men of size should look clean and fashionable at all times, in my opinion. We already have a certain command, we definitely have to look the part. But, some days I find that casual wear is needed. At times, I don’t want a collar on my neck. I did some searching and Bad Rhino came with a solution.

So, we are back with one of my favorite brands! That’s absolutely correct! Bad Rhino. I am a fan of any brand that provides different selections for men of size. The truth of the matter is that it’s difficult for men of size to find clothes aren’t plain and make us look stiff. I love what Bad Rhino is doing for the big and tall/plus male/brawn males. The styles that are available. There are tapered jeans for men of size. There are skinny jeans for men of size. Yes! You read correctly. Do you know how difficult it is to find skinny jeans for men of size?! Their denim collection is an absolute gift.

What Is Bad Rhino?

If you frequent this blog, you know that Bad Rhino is becoming one of my favorite clothing brands for men of size. Bad Rhino is one of the few clothing outlets that cater specifically to brawn, big and tall, and plus males. Bad Rhino makes a solid effort to make trendy clothing for men of size. We all love our grandparents, but we don’t want to dress like them now. Bad Rhino makes a solid effort to separate from our grandparents big and tall fashion line.

Bad Rhino In Brooklyn?

Being that Bad Rhino is becoming one of my favorites, I had to stop through my place of birth. Brooklyn, New York! I had to stop at the Barclay Center. There is an indescribable appeal that Brooklyn has. Of course, I am biased but Brooklyn is a city that has my heart. People from all across the United States travel to make Brooklyn, New York their home. So, I had to incorporate the love of my residence with a brand that is making valid strides to accommodate the needs of the modern man of size.

As a man of size, I can definitely appreciate the effort that Bad Rhino is making! The style of jeans vary and there are an assortment of styling options that can accommodate any man of size. Whatever your styling preference is Bad Rhino is a brand that plans to accommodate you!

I am wearing a hat and scarf set, I was excited that the hat fit. Between the size of my forehead and my locks, it almost seemed impossible. The wool-lined coat is perfect for winter days when a big man doesn’t want to feel too bulky. Yes, we want to stay warm without a feeling like we are wearing a tank. Bad Rhino took care of that! I had a problem at on point of finding denim with a different cut that didn’t sag in my groin area, Bad Rhino take care of that. And they have footwear that caters to any style or any vibe that you need.  Whether it’s night life, casual or a quick walk in the park, Bad Rhino has all manners of options to work with you. Now, You can take Bad Rhino to your favorite place!

Too Big For What?

Can a person over 300 pounds do calisthenics? Can a man of size do calisthenics? Can brawn men, big and men and plus men do pull-ups? When I first started to make some changes in my life, I was met with resistance. It started watching a video of some men performing calisthenics on a pull-up bar. I was intrigued! I was impressed. I marveled the way the men and women seemed to suspend their bodies in the air, I marveled at the way the moved their bodies so effortlessly. I felt it would be a great change for me to start working out in the park, instead of all the attention and “coaching” I received in the gym.

Kavah King of The Gentlemen’s Curb

Go Hard Or Go Home.

So the next day, I got my water, I made sure my phone was charged and I walked to the nearest park with fitness apparatuses. I started stretching, I turned my music up and started to work. Well, at least what I thought was work! I tried to perform a pull-up and I couldn’t! I was met with snickers from the other men that worked out in the park. A few of them said to me “big guys like you don’t come out here.” “You should go to the gym.” I felt defeated and I decided to head home. The next day I had a long talk with myself. I charged myself with the thought process that you have to crawl before you walk.

I began with a process that helped my pull-up process, you can review the post here: Too Big For What?Too Big For What Pull-Up 102, and Too Big For What Pull-Up 103.

For all of our readers, your goals aren’t unattainable. We are all at the point where we have to crawl again. When we were born we got a lot of bumps and bruises trying to walk. In life, we are faced with those challenges in our lives. Let’s work, it isn’t going to be easy. Let’s inspire and motivate each other. We Are Still Celebrating!

Yes! We are still celebrating our blogger anniversary and guess who benefits?! You! This year has been a great year. In Fashion In A BIG Way

scott-bayliss

There is always excitement when a brand launches a clothing line for men of size. There are limited fashionable choices for big and tall, “brawn” men and plus size men. When we find out more options are available, some of us treat it as a celebration. Recently, the clothing brand Asos launched their big and tall men’s wear collection.

    3. How long have you modelled?

Literally a month!

The good people at Asos spotted me at a music festival in Bristol.

I was asked to do a couple test shoots with them before they made a firm commitment.

A good friend has also started up his own clothing label ‘Visionary’ so I was asked to do some modelling for him also.

    4. How long have you been acting? What is it about acting that draws you to it?

Acting has always been my passion from an early age.

I graduated university in 2014; ever since then I have been performing with my theatre company ‘Propolis Theatre’ all over the UK which culminated in us performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016.

I also have been working with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre performing and leading workshops and at the same time doing my own freelance acting work.

I would say the thing that draws me to acting is that I get to represent real life. There are a lot of problems in the world today and especially as a theatre maker it is our job to shed a light on things unseen; while also it’s something that I find enjoyable!

  1. How does it feel to represent men of size in the fashion world?

It’s something that I feel really humbled by.

I believe all people should be represented, as it gives inspiration to all. We are not all the same and that needs to be celebrated because the diversity in this world is something to admire which rarely gets the attention it deserves.

I’ve been getting a lot of love on social media recently from all over the world which has been amazing!

I feel like that’s the biggest thing we as people need to do is support one another.

This is a situation I never thought I would be in and for me to receive so much support is empowering me to do better and for the people supporting its empowering for them to see me representing men of size in the fashion world.

So it’s an ongoing process of support an empowerment which is brilliant!

  1. In your opinion, do men of size have enough representation in mainstream media?

No I don’t feel we do but I do think it’s on the rise! If we do get more representation, people will be more accepting to different body types within the media and in general. It’s definitely growing and to be a part of it is a surreal experience.

It definitely helps having a big company like Asos supporting plus size models now, and I’m sure it won’t be the only one.

  1. Was modelling something that you planned on doing? Or did you stumble on it?

Literally something I stumbled across.

As I said I was spotted by Asos at a music festival in Bristol, with no intention of going into that industry.

People have always told me have I ever thought about doing modelling and of course doing acting sometimes the two worlds collide but I never thought I would be where I am today.

It shows that anything is possible if you keep an open mind and your willing to learn you can achieve things you never thought were possible.

  1. What’s a day in the life of a model?

The only thing that’s really changed in my life now is social media.

I’ve been live on the Asos website for a week now and like I’ve said I’ve been getting a lot of support and love which is great!

But other than that, I’m still the same person I’ve always been, for me it’s important to stay grounded, I’m lucky to have family friends around me that help do that.

2016 has been a great year but now it’s time to progress and go even harder in 2017!
