Big And Healthy? Gentlemen’s Curb Plus Male Blogger

As seen on Plus Model Mag

I’m proof that you can be big AND healthy.

A few months ago, I went to the doctor’s office for a physical examination. After the nurse recorded my weight and vitals, she told me that she was impressed because I was “healthy”.

Then she asked me: “Can you tell your secret?”

I replied, “What secret?” to which she asked, “How are you that heavy and healthy?”

At the time, I was 324 pounds and I have to admit that her question offended me. But it was not a surprise.

After the doctor conducted the physical exam, he handed me a sheet of paper and told me that I should see a nutritionist. As I left the office, I glanced at the sheet to see that the doctor had written on it that I was “morbidly obese.”
Sound familiar? We have all been led to believe that being healthy is only associated with a certain size and lean physique. If you’re overweight, you can’t possibly be healthy. However, I am proof that that belief is wrong.

I have never been a small man. It isn’t in my genetics. That doctor’s visit is something that has stayed on my mind and made me question a few things. Is the medical world basing their diagnoses solely on stereotypes? What does “healthy” look like? Just because I am a man of size, I am automatically viewed as unhealthy? There are many athletes that weigh more than me. Are they getting calls from the doctor that they are near death because of their weight?

I was curious as to how a woman might feel in this same situation so I spoke with my blogger friend and sometimes workout partner Sarah of Sarah Taylor’s Journey to get her thoughts on this topic of being healthy regardless of size. This is what she had to say:

I’ve always been plus – I came out of the womb at almost 10 pounds and almost 2 feet long and yet I have always been active. I’ve played sports most guys play – Football, Basketball, Ruby, Volleyball, running, etc. But for some reason, it shocks people that I can move the way I do and can keep up at the gym. I recently started working out at a new gym that offers Bootcamp style classes and on my first day, I got lots of looks that read “What’s this big girl doing in here?”. As I met new trainers each day, they would approach me to correct me and my form, and as they approached me they would back away, realizing that I have amazing form and can keep up. Why is it when people look at a plus size woman, do they think she can’t be fit? Does that mean I can’t be active, healthy and fit if I’ve got a little more meat on my bones than the size 2 working out next to me? Please …. let me out squat you!

There has to be a new standard that needs to be set. You cannot diagnose someone’s health by just looking at them. Both men and women of size are healthy and we do work out! No, I don’t want a six pack, but as long as I am healthy, I will be fine.

We don’t need your “encouragement”. I certainly don’t need to hear, “Go, big man”, as if it’s a major thing for me to be working out at my size. I don’t approach a smaller person and say “Keep going little fella!” We are all capable and our size does not indicate that we are unhealthy. It’s time to shatter stereotypes and move forward.

New Years Eve With Argyleculture and JCPenney

NYE With Argyleculture And JCPenney

2016 was a great year. There were some highs and some lows, I am thankful there were more highs than lows! We are all thankful that we are on this side of the living. As the new year approaches, many of us want to make resolutions and embrace changes in our lives. But, as the new year approaches, I want to showcase a brand that has been consistent for years.

JCPenney!

I had the privilege of attending a party sponsored by JCPenney. I had an amazing time and I met some amazing people. At the party, there were some clothes on display and a certain blazer in particular caught my eye. I had to do some investigating! I always try to keep my eye out for fashion, especially for men of size. We don’t have many options in terms of fashion. When I find something that’s fashionable and it fits! I jump at the opportunity.

Argyleculture

Well, I am here to let you know that Argyleculture has some great styling options. This blazer immediately grabbed my attention! The blazer gave a formal and casual feel. I am not sure of a better way to bring in a new year, full of possibilities! Make sure that you check out JCPenney’s offerings and bring in the new year with some consistency. Of course, for the New Year we celebrate. Well, in my case I celebrate a lot! I take life seriously. On my way to this evening’s events, I had to make sure that Argyleculture was with me. Sometimes, you have to take the “old” with you in the new year. Much success to all in the New Year. May all of your paths be peaceful and pleasant. Happy Monday! Many people see Mondays as dreadful because the work week starts again. Not me! I would rather take another Monday than a coffin! There were a lot of good vibes this weekend and later on you will see all of the work that we are doing. I was told that I look like a Chippendale’s dancer in this look. But, we are moving forward! Most big men would rather a nice sweatshirt and some shirts and preferably some very comfortable footwear. Not today!

I was not aware that being inspired by fall fashion, would result in me receiving comments that I look like a Chippendale dancer! (Well, I am behind on some school loans, so if someone has a hook up.) I mean maybe they need a big and tall dancer! LOL! Kenneth Cole is one of the designers that I love that cater to the size of my feet. A lot of shoes for men with big feet are extremely plain. Ordinary. Kenneth Cole is one of the companies that push the envelope in terms of fashion.

The socks are from Tulliani, which is a brand of socks that cater to men with larger feet. (The socks are amazing and very comfortable.) The shirt is from Old Navy’s big and tall section.  (Yes, it’s pink)

Introducing Ghilli Levi- Gentlemen’s Curb Plus Male Blogger

In Fashion In A BIG Way

IMG_8184

Gentlemen’s Curb is a blog that deals with fashion and fitness in a big way. In other words, this is a blog for the big and tall and plus males. Our focuses are fashion, fitness and mental health.  At this point we want to incorporate different styles and different aesthetics in regards to the fashion portion of the blog. In most cases fashion is relative and everyone has the right to articulate their fashion sense differently. With that being stated, I would like to introduce to our readers Ghili Levi (You can see more of Ghili by viewing the link.) Ghili will be contributing the Gentlemen’s Curb, so please get familiar with him.

IMG_8172

Ghili is a man of size, but has more of a slender build. So, he definitely fits in the curb! We went to the Park Slope section of Brooklyn and let Ghili put in some work. Ghili provides a different perspective for the big and tall male. The frame is slightly different, but the basis is still the same. We want to add some diversity on the blog site, as we step forward we hope that you will grow with us.IMG_8176

Give us some feedback, let us know in the comments what you thought of Ghili’s contribution.  kavah.king@gentlemenscurb.com

Thoughts On The ‘Curb

In Fitness In A BIG Way

Kavah

Because of my size, at times there is an audience when I try to work out in the gym. Now, some people may feel as if they would like an audience. They may feel like it motivates them to push harder. However, speaking for myself I do not like an audience. Or the comments “you usually don’t see big men on the bar.” Or the comments before I pull up “you need to use weights.” Or being teased when I run or do any type of cardiovascular exercises. (Yes, I hear jokes when I run. But, I can’t let them stop me.) Then there are those who watch your entire workout and want to give unnecessary pointers. We both looked at the same YouTube channel. We both saw the same videos and received the same information. Don’t recite the information you recently saw to try and sound like an expert. Our body structures are clearly different. We can tell you focus on your abdominal muscles.

Kavah 4

It’s assumed that I am too heavy to do certain exercises. Believe it or not, I am not concerned with the opinions of others. I would rather simply to work out in peace. So, after dark I try to go to a playground with the apparatuses for calisthenics.
I try and work out with out the watchful eye of the naysayers, the critics, the hecklers and the experts. I am a lot more focused alone when I work out.

Kavah 3

So on occasion I head to the playground after dark to be alone. So my “big ass” can do pull ups on the bar. (There are many scaffolds in Brooklyn at this point. Many companies are trying to build and capitalize on the “change” that Brooklyn is going through. One person told me “get off the bar before you pull the whole building down.” #HowSway)

Kavah 2

Even the police stop me and question if I am participating in illegal activities. No, Mr. officer, I am just trying to lose weight. I know I can look intimidating at times, but presently I am trying to strengthen my heart, my body and my mind. The purpose of this post is to inspire all those like my self that can relate in some shape form or fashion. Don’t stop the fight! Thanks for stopping by the ‘curb, I hope you enjoy your stay!

Corduroy Curb Gentlemen’s Curb Plus Male Blogger

In Fashion In A BIG Way

Kavah King

I had the opportunity to travel to Boston I wanted to look casual, because I had dinner reservations later on that evening. I wouldn’t have time to head to the hotel to change, so I wore something that could serve two purposes.

I don’t want a polished look all of the time. But, I want to be comfortable and have a casual look. I don’t always want to wear a tie, blazer or a cardigan.

You want an outfit that you can wear at work and you want to be able to attend a happy hour or a brunch. Or even to watch your favorite team play.

Kavah King

We stopped in the mall to snap a few photos and I thought I am not the only gentleman that goes through this!

The latest look from the Gentlemen’s Curb is a simple corduroy blazer. The corduroy blazer is durable enough to with stand temperature on nights where it is a bit chilly, but you don’t want the hassle of carrying a jacket. The lining of the blazer is enough to keep you warm of course depending on the temperature.

DSC_6338 (1)

Since the Notorious B.I.G. wore a “red and black lumberjack with a hat to match,” I have been a fan of plaid patterns. I always liked the pattern and the combination of plaid, so when plaid fits..I take the chance! Plaid patterns are very diverse and usually there are more than two colors. it is easier to create an ensemble that speaks to you.

The khakis on the other hand are a lot thinner than the jacket.

They don’t wrinkle as often and they are suitable for the office or your favorite lounge. They aren’t too loose and aren’t too snug and still give a Brooklyn feel.

Kavah King

I am from Brooklyn, New York. At times Timberland’s boots are so necessary. They are hiking boots, but they subtly represent New York. For as long as I can remember Timberland’s have been a standard in New York. So, in appropriate Brooklyn fashion

The ensemble is affordable and will make you feel relaxed and prepared for both 9-5’s! Thanks for stopping by the curb!

Too Big For What? Pull Ups 101

Too BIG For What? Pull Ups 101

So, a few years ago a women I was dating asked why one part of my arm was “harder” (or more toned) than the other arm. I did some investigating and found that the comment was true. The comment did bother myself esteem a bit, but the comment did motivate me. I decided then that I wanted to become stronger.

At the time I was about 293 pounds. If I am not mistaken about two hundred of those pounds rest in my forehead. So, I started watching exercise videos to try and prepare my body for something I wanted to change in my life.

After I worked up some courage, I went to Jackie Robinson park in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. I went to give pull ups a try and I failed miserably. The other men in the park laughed at me. They said “you are too big!” “Go to the gym, big man!” “Ain’t no big dudes out here!”
I was frustrated, not because of the comments but because I couldn’t do the pull ups.

I left the park and promised myself that regardless of my size that I would accomplish my goal. So, I then had figure out a way to strengthen my body. I used the motivation from people teasing me about my size to make it work. I made a three step video for those that want to prepare themselves to do pull ups. Leave some feedback! Stay tuned for part two!!
