Why Your Tank Keeps Running Empty During Your Fitness Efforts
Dedicating yourself to your fitness can feel great. At last, you’ll be able to address your health in ways you’ve never gotten around to before. You might dedicate a set time each day to the cause. You may just decide that you’re going to take a more focused approach to fitness. The moment you make that vow, you’ll feel better straight away. And, as hard as they are, those first few fitness sessions will make a massive difference to how you feel on the whole. You might notice aches and pains fading. You should also see your stamina increasing straight away.
But, after these initial improvements, many of us hit walls when it comes to working out. The buzz of getting started wears off, and it becomes harder to force ourselves to keep on top. For some of us, our sessions themselves become more challenging as time goes by. It isn’t unusual, for instance, to reach a stage in your stamina which you can’t get past. It may be that you want to build your practice, but find that you keep running out of steam every time you get past a certain point.
The first thing to bear in mind is that this is entirely normal. It’s also the reason many people give up the fight after a few weeks of trying. But, you needn’t do the same. Instead, remember those benefits you felt to start. Then, ask yourself whether the following mistakes are behind your inability to keep your fuel tank full.
You Aren’t Eating Enough
One of the most common reasons for issues here is that you aren’t eating enough. For many of us, losing weight goes hand in hand with our fitness goals. When you pair the two together, though, you end up eating less and still burning more calories than you ever have. That means you’re never going to be able to push your fitness further. You won’t have the energy to do so. This is especially the case if you’re embarking on something like weight lifting. To make a real go of this, you need to increase your intake of foods heavy in protein. Otherwise, your body will neither sustain you or turn your efforts to muscle. You could do yourself real damage. Hence why bodybuilders often follow diet plans and stock up on protein shakes. Most of them would tell you that cutting back on eating is the absolute worst thing you can do. Even with other forms of fitness, not eating enough can have terrible consequences. You’ll soon start running out of fuel so early that you may notice your fitness sessions getting shorter rather than longer. That’s far from ideal. You Aren’t Warming Up Right
When we first come to the world of fitness, many of discard the importance of warming up. Most just jump straight into our workouts without a second thought about what we should do before. But, that may also be to blame for your running out of fuel so fast. That’s because warm-ups are a crucial part of any exercise regime. By stretching your muscles and giving them a chance to prepare, you ensure they’re ready for whatever you’re about to throw at them. If you try to skip this step, you’re going to cause a great deal more strain to every muscle in your body. Understandably, this can fast lead to having to stop your workout. In no time, you’ll find that your muscles are cramped and tight. In extreme cases, you may even face cutting exercises short due to injuries you sustain along the way. When you think of it like that, skipping this side of fitness isn’t worth it. For the sake of ten minutes stretching before you start, you can keep going for double the time. Even if you already warm up, it’s possible this is where your problem lies. If your muscles always seem to put an end to things, do a little research. Check that you’re warming up your whole body enough for the exercises you’re attempting. Get this right, and you should be able to build your practice without any more walls getting in your way.
You’re Pushing Yourself Too Far
Often, we talk about the need to push ourselves past our limits. If you don’t do this to some extent, you’re never going to extend your workouts or improve your fitness. But, this isn’t as simple an issue as it sounds. If you keep wiping yourself out early, it’s a sure sign you’re pushing yourself too far too soon. And, that can be as detrimental to your health as not pushing yourself at all. The thing to bear in mind is that you need to strike a balance here. You want to get your heart rate up and break a sweat, but you shouldn’t be pushing yourself to the point of feeling sick. The fact that you’re unable to work out for extended periods suggests that you’re hitting yourself too hard the moment your sessions start. That’s never a good idea. Instead, you should start slow with low impact sports and then build yourself up to pushing those limits. If you jump straight in with high-speed treadmills, it’s inevitable that you’ll wear yourself down. Instead, you want to start slow then build the speed as you get into your flow. By pushing yourself during the last five minutes of your session, you can grow your stamina without ever putting a premature end to your efforts.
You’re Leaving It Too Long Between Sessions
Lastly, it may be that you’re leaving too long a gap between each session. That means any stamina you manage to build up is waning from one session to the next. Each time you come to work out, then, you’re effectively starting from scratch. That’s not good news. While it may seem best to dedicate one long session to this cause each week, that’s never a good idea. You would be far better off setting aside as little as ten minutes each day. That way, your stamina can carry over from one session to the next and grow at a steady rate. If you keep going back to square one, you’ll soon lose patience, so don’t do it. Keeping up the momentum is important, even if you have to make a conscious effort to make the time for this. If you keep your goals small, though, you should find them manageable. Most of us can get up ten minutes earlier, or even take fifteen minutes out of our evenings. Give it a go, and see how much further you’re able to go as a result.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out what mistakes you’re making. Nor does it take a massive change to address the issues. Even if you aren’t sure where you’re going wrong, it’s worth taking all the above mistakes into account. Addressing your behavior in each area is sure to see you achieving much better workouts. In no time, you’ll find that your fuel tank stays full well into every exercise session.
